University of Kentucky Accelerated BS/BA/MD Program

The B.S./B.A./M.D. Program is a highly selective program developed for a small group of exceptional high school students who plan to pursue a career in medicine. Students accepted into the program will complete a B.S. or B.A. in Biology as well as an M.D. degree in only seven years. While there is no guarantee of admission to the UK College of Medicine, meeting the minimum B.S./B.A./M.D. program expectations, exceptional performance on the MCAT, demonstrated maturity, and continued commitment to the medical field will make students very competitive applicants for admission.

What are the benefits of the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program? This program offers a number of benefits including critical and personalized academic and career advising from select undergraduate faculty, medical school faculty, and professional advisors. Students will be exposed to cutting edge research in the Department of Biology as well as the UK College of Medicine. There are opportunities to meet with or shadow specific practicing physicians in a student’s field of interest. Also, students have access to knowledgeable medical school administration for guidance in regards to the admissions process.

How do I apply for the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program? In order to be eligible to apply for the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program, you must have a minimum of a 31 ACT score or 1360 SAT (M+CR) score and a 3.75 unweighted GPA. The first step to apply for the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program is to submit your general UK Admissions application (www.applyuk.com) or Common Application (www.commonapp.org), and declare biology as your major. Then, you will need to submit the application and essay for the UK competitive academic scholarships (www.uky.edu/AcademicScholarships/files/AcadSchApp.pdf).

Check the box under “College Information” to indicate you are applying for the B.S./M.D. Program. The final step would be to write a supplemental B.S./B.A./M.D. personal essay and submit this with the competitive academic scholarship application (postmarked no later than January 13, 2012). The B.S./B.A./M.D. personal essay (one page maximum) should describe the following:

-Your high school or community activities, leadership positions, special awards, work experiences, and other interests;
-Why you want to become a physician; and
-Why you are interested in the B.S./B.A./M.D. program at the University of Kentucky.
