Chicken Soup for the Soul: Call for Submissions
Chicken Soup for the Soul: Finding My Faith
101 Inspirational Stories about Life, Belief, and Spiritual Renewal
Faith is more than reading a holy book or following a set of rules. Faith is a lifestyle; it impacts everything we do. Whether we consider ourselves to be Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu or any other religion, our belief in a higher power directs our lives and our thoughts. But faith is not something we're born with. We may acquire faith through the teachings of our parents or religious leaders. Or we might find faith through an event in our lives that convinces us of the presence of God. Friends and even strangers can bring us into the knowledge that life is more meaningful when we have faith.
Everyone's "faith story" is different. Some of us find faith late in life. Others lose their faith after a tragic event or spiritual dry spell, only to rediscover it through a divine nudge. Faith can appear quickly or build up over time. It can hit us like a sledgehammer or whisper in our ear. It can show up in a miracle or in an ordinary event. However faith arrives, it is life-changing and powerful.
If you have an inspirational personal story of finding your faith, we want to hear from you! Did a pivotal event bring you to your knees in prayer? Was a special friend or family member the catalyst for your faith journey? Did you lose your faith and then find it again? Was God's presence made known to you in a way that just couldn't be ignored? Your story may even inspire someone else to find their faith!
Please remember, we do not like "as told to" stories. Please write in the first person about yourself or someone close to you. Do not ghostwrite a story for someone else. If a story was previously published, we will probably not use it unless it ran in a small circulation venue. Let us know where the story was previously published in the "Comments" section of the submission form. If the story was published in a past Chicken Soup for the Soul book, please do not submit it.
If your story is chosen, you will be a published author and your bio will be printed in the book if you so choose. You will also receive a check for $200 and 10 free copies of your book, worth more than $100. You will retain the copyright for your story and you will retain the right to resell it.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS DECEMBER 31, 2011.

Whats Going On? (Stop Violence, Stop The Silence)
Since December of 2010, Lexington, KY has witnessed a spike in crime and a rash of homicides and shootings with the victims being young, African American males. If that isn't enough, we have people that have witnessed these crimes & refuse to speak out because of the perverted use of the "no snitching" mantra. On top of that, very few news outlets, politicians, athletes, and most importantly (because of our close ties to the s...treets) hip hop artists have not drawn these murders together to form a bigger picture & are not speaking out to OUR community about whats going on. Well The Devine Experience & Devassa will attempt to do our part in speaking out through ART!
The Devine Experience presents "Whats Going On?"
Theme: STOP THE VIOLENCE & STOP THE SILENCE
Date:Saturday May 21st
Time: 9pm-11
Location: Devassa Bar & Cafe, Victorian Square Lexington, KY
Cost: $5 cover (proceeds going to Brian Carr's fam.) & additional donations excepted.
Program: A FEW SPEAKERS FROM OUR COMMUNITY, live band, live art, spoken word, neo sol, hip hop and more all performing pieces centered around uplifting our community & stopping the violence!DJ Johnnie Johnson on the 1's & 2's after the event.
Devine Carama, D. Page, Jaria Gordon, Courtney & Cole Campbell, Jaria Gordon, Truth B. Told, Jeremiah Muwanga and more have confirmed as performers.
Let's come together that night and celebrate life & honor the dead. Let's uplift our community through the talents that God gave us. Let's pack Devassa out & show this city that we can come out in droves for something positive as well. Think about the tragedies in the last few weeks and just ask youself "Whats Going On?" And what do YOU intend on doing about it?

"Nevertheless: A Story of Resolve"
The play centers around one woman’s courageous battle after receiving startling news. It is a story of hope and perseverance in the midst of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Her story is YOUR story. You will laugh, cry, and be renewed.
The vision for this play is multidimensional. One, it is to encourage those who struggle with their faith. Have you ever questioned why you are faced with certain trials? Have you ever wondered when the storm will end? Secondly, it is to educate the community about breast cancer and to encourage women and men to be tested. A representative from the Susan G. Komen Foundation will be at each performance to answer questions and disseminate information about breast cancer awareness. Lastly, it is philanthropic in scope. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Step By Step Ministries, a non-profit organization for young single mothers.
Come join us for five exhilarating performances at the University of Kentucky’s Memorial Hall on:
April 22 @ 7:00 p.m.*

MLK Mixtape Project
Tonight @ the MLK Mixtape Project: Come out and connect with Professor Melynda Price, who will discuss a portion of King's book Strength to Love. Dr. Price is truly one of our stars here at UK--having earned both a PhD and JD, her doctoral dissertation was awarded the 2007 best dissertation award from the Race, Ethnicity, and Politics section of the American Political Science Association. She works on one of the most crucial issues of our time: race and punishment in the criminal justice system, and is working on a book titled "At The Cross: Race, Religion, and Citizenship in the Politics of the Death Penalty Among African Americans. Scholarship is not just researching, writing, and publishing for Professor Price: she has long been committed to action--in the academy, in the prisons, and in the street. Come out to meet and discuss MLK's work with Dr. Price; come out to hear more about her work; come out to share your perspective; come out to meet beautiful, thoughtful, engaged people from throughout our community.
No matter what else we might do, we have to create spaces where we can come together, discuss our issues from our own perspectives, hear each other, and build visions and action for the future. Let's create that space together...
What: The MLK Mixtape Project
Where: St Paul AME Church 251 N. Upper St, Lexington
When: Tonight, 6-8pm
Even if you can't make it yourself, tell somebody!

'Of Warts and Wishbones- The Body as a Blank Page'
- Instructed by Bianca Spriggs
One of the oldest pieces of advice for writers is to “write what you know.” What do we know better than our own bodies? Yet, the body continues to evolve around us, surprising us with its durability and with its vulnerability. Whether you see the body as temple or temporary vehicle, the body is the ultimate canvas, the ultimate blank page, an ever-evolving source of inspiration.
Date: Saturday, March 19
Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm
Location The Carnegie Center
251 West Second Street
Lexington, KY
For more information on the course, pre-Registration, etc, please contact us online at: carnegiecenterlex.org. Or call us at: 859-254-4175.
