LexArts Will Bring Annual Grant Workshops To The Community

LEXINGTON – LexArts, the largest local donor organization for the creative arts, gives more than $1 million to various organizations each year as an effort “to integrate the arts into our daily lives.”

Each year several organizations vie for grants from LexArts to help them present programs in the area. Though the demand is high for the grants, ranging from $500 to more than $25,000, many well deserving organizations still don’t know that the grants exist.

This year they will take a new approach to reach more people about the funds available. “This is the first time LexArts has held grant writing workshops outside of downtown. Our objective is to make more people aware of this opportunity and to underscore our mission to serve all of Fayette County,” said Jim Clark, President and CEO of LexArts.

The LexArts Board of Directors has partnered with Lexington Public Library to hold grant workshops to explain the LexArts’ Community Arts Grant application process.

“Our goal at LexArts is to make funds and resources available to as many artists and art groups as we can. Making the process easier will open new doors for emerging and talented artists who may not have otherwise been able find funding,” says Eunice Beatty, Ph.D., grants chair.

Workshops will be held April 7, at 2 p.m. at Beaumont Library and then at 5 p.m. at Northside Library. There will still be a grant writing workshop at ArtsPlace on April 5 at 5:30 p.m.

It was also announced that the dollar-for-dollar cash match for Project grants has been eliminated. Project grants range from $500-$2500 are for non-profit groups that want to use the arts as a way interact with the community.

The application deadline for the 2012 fiscal year (FY12) is April 22, 2011. FY12 programming begins July 1, 2011 and runs through June 30, 2012 for all grant recipients. The new guidelines for funding can be found at lexarts.org/resources/grants .

Artists and nonprofit arts groups interested in finding out more information may also contact Nathan Zamarron, Community Arts Manager for LexArts, at 859.255.2951 or nzamarron@lexarts.org.

"Nevertheless: A Story of Resolve"

The play centers around one woman’s courageous battle after receiving startling news. It is a story of hope and perseverance in the midst of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Her story is YOUR story. You will laugh, cry, and be renewed.

The vision for this play is multidimensional. One, it is to encourage those who struggle with their faith. Have you ever questioned why you are faced with certain trials? Have you ever wondered when the storm will end? Secondly, it is to educate the community about breast cancer and to encourage women and men to be tested. A representative from the Susan G. Komen Foundation will be at each performance to answer questions and disseminate information about breast cancer awareness. Lastly, it is philanthropic in scope. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Step By Step Ministries, a non-profit organization for young single mothers.

Come join us for five exhilarating performances at the University of Kentucky’s Memorial Hall on:

April 22 @ 7:00 p.m.*
April 23 @ 2:00 and 7:00 p.m.
April 29 @ 7:00 p.m.**
May 1 @ 3:00 p.m.*

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 the day of performance and may be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 859-257-TICS
or by visiting UK Student Center Ticket Office, Room 253.

When her boyfriend dumps her for someone more "serious," Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style. After turning Broadway and MTV hot pink, this "Feel-Good Song and Dance Juggernaut" (New York Magazine) is "The Best New Musical Around!" (WOR).

The machine will be in the Student Center on March 31st -April 2nd. The machine will be available to use from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday.

'Of Warts and Wishbones- The Body as a Blank Page'

- Instructed by Bianca Spriggs

One of the oldest pieces of advice for writers is to “write what you know.” What do we know better than our own bodies? Yet, the body continues to evolve around us, surprising us with its durability and with its vulnerability. Whether you see the body as temple or temporary vehicle, the body is the ultimate canvas, the ultimate blank page, an ever-evolving source of inspiration.

Vote Daily to Restore your favorite HBCU!

It's Back!
2011 Retool Your School Campus Improvement Program

The Home Depot is overjoyed to bring this essential and successful program back for a second year. We know how valuable our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities are, and how much they have contributed to our country's growth in so many ways. What could be more worthwhile than helping preserve and improve some of America’s most historic campuses and landmarks?

Last year, we awarded grants totaling $150,000 to HBCUs, including a $50,000 award to Elizabeth City State University to help them achieve their objective of building a new baseball field for the school and the neighboring community. Ten additional schools received $10,000 each for a variety of projects ranging from landscaping to lighting to sprinkler systems.

Our HBCUs have so much to gain from this opportunity. We invite you to participate in any way you choose. Only HBCUs can apply for the grants, but you can have a say in who wins the grant money by casting your vote for your favorite HBCU when voting begins.

Retool Your School. And help revitalize education.

Try Teaching!

Eastern Kentucky University’s “Try Teaching” program is again accepting applications from mid- and second-career professionals who are intrigued about their potential in front of a classroom.

The nationally innovative program is geared to those who have doubts about leaving their current job behind to return to college for a second degree. Each participant spends one or two weeks in a K-12 classroom, gaining first-hand experience as they assisted in the preparation and execution of lesson plans while learning successful educational practices from their teaching mentors.

The application deadline this year is June 30. Because the number of participants is limited, Resor suggested that interested individuals contact her as soon as possible at 859-622-2165 or at cynthia.resor@eku.edu. More information is available at www.tryteaching.eku.edu.
