Justice Clarence Thomas to speak at University of Kentucky
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas will deliver the 13th Roy R. and Virginia F. Ray Lecture on April 5 at 6 p.m. the University of Kentucky's Memorial Hall.
UK College of Law Dean David A. Brennen will moderate a conversation among Thomas, American Bar Association President William T. Robinson III and UK Law Professor Stephen Clowney.
Robinson and Clowney will explore various aspects of Thomas' life experiences, influences on his decision-making process as a member of the Supreme Court, and how the Court has evolved during his service over the past two decades. The conversation will draw upon Thomas' 2007 autobiography "My Grandfather's Son: A Memoir."

Greetings,
I am Shana McCombs Miss Kentucky State University 2011-2012. I am a native of Hopkinsville, KY. This May, I will be graduating from Kentucky State University, and I will begin my new journey in life.
I have a dream to bring positive black entertainment to Kentucky. God has blessed me with many gifts and one gift that I want to act on is playwriting. I want to tour plays, Christian comedy shows, and poetry slams throughout the state of Kentucky. I have been discouraged not to focus my career on African Americans. Why? Because it has been said that African Americans do not support, but I say to that statement “call those things which be not, as though they were”, and “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me”. The scripture, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” is one of my main reasons I want to bring positive black entertainment to Kentucky. There are so many children who are raised up knowing about Jesus Christ, but what about those who aren’t? I want to reach those children through my plays. ...

Free Computer and Training
In partnership with the William Wells Brown Community Center, the Kentucky Housing Corporation, Lexington Housing Authority and Lexmark International, ConnectKentucky will launch a new technology training program on Tuesday aimed at enhancing the lives of those living in the 292 Hope VI Apartments in downtown Lexington.
Residents of the Hope VI apartments will be able to sign up for six hours of computer lessons, at the end of which they will be given a desk-top computer, a printer and subsidized broadband access for six months, Gate said.
The targeted area is near William Wells Brown, and the targeted population is families and seniors. The goal is to give East End residents a chance to compete in a global economy by placing a crucial piece of the puzzle in their hands.
ConnectKentucky began as a public-private partnership in 2004 to fill gaps in broadband coverage across the state and to teach residents how to use computers.Much of its initial work was done in Eastern Kentucky and in rural areas. Inmates at Blackburn Correctional Facility refurbished state computers which were given to students in those areas.
Priority will be given to families with schoolchildren and to seniors. No one who has participated in a similar program with the Lexington Fayette County Urban League will be accepted.

Naturally you: curls, coils and locs!
Hair Matters … Live Curly, a grassroots advocacy group, want black women to embrace their naturally curly hair and redefine their self-image through information offered at an event they are hosting on March 18.
“Naturally you: curls, coils and locs” will feature local and out-of-state stylists who will display the range of styles available with naturally textured hair, as well as ways to better care for curly follicles. The information could be eye-opening for some biracial girls as well. One of the presenters will be Ladosha Lynn Wright, a licensed cosmetology instructor in Cleveland who also produces and hosts the radio talk show, What They Don’t Tell You at the Hair Salon. Wright teaches the study of scalp and hair properties, which help black women properly care for their hair.

LIFT Conference
LIFT is a free conference for students in grades five through 12 and their parents. The purpose is to get all of them thinking, talking and doing something about getting more education after high school.
The conference - which is presented by the Lexington Urban League Young Professionals with support from Chase Bank, Fayette County Public Schools, YMCA Black Achievers, Transylvania University, Lexmark International and Shadynook Baptist Church in Paris - will include three components.
*Students in eighth grade will be treated to a session called “The Complete College Experience.” They will tour Transylvania University, complete a college application and an essay, and hear college students talk about what to expect.
*The one for parents is designed to make them aware of texting language, special-needs programs and individual learning plans in schools, cultural diversity in the classroom, and tips for tutoring math and reading. There will also be a Nicholasville police officer will discuss bullying and cyber bullying, showing the repercussions on both sides of the issue.
*The third component is for high schoolers. High schoolers in ninth through 11th grades will learn about college planning, ACT and SAT preparation, and the real deal about college. A panel of students from Transy, Morehead State University and the University of Kentucky will speak candidly about campus life.During lunch, three students will receive scholarships for essays they wrote. Also, at the end of the conference, three laptops will be given away, along with other donated items.

This program is a collaboration with the UK African American Africana Studies. These conversations will happen every 2nd Saturday, December-June except for the Month of June- Father’s Day (June 16, 2012).

The Summer Career Discovery Program

The Summer Career Discovery program is an intensive two-week program held at the University of Kentucky College of Design. The program is open to high school students who will be juniors and seniors in the fall semester of 2012. Graduating seniors who have been admitted to the University of Kentucky (including the College of Design) and would like to get a head start on design concepts and skills are also encouraged to attend.
The goal of the program is to explore the many facets of design education. A major emphasis will be placed on the foundational experience of an intensive design studio, where individual education is enhanced and nurtured in a collective environment. Participants will be challenged to think creatively, analyze design, and present their work to peers and professionals.
Over the course of two weeks, participants will take part in a variety of events on and off campus (from morning till evening), including lectures, field trips, office visits, and workshops. Events are structured to broaden the participan's understanding of the design professions, and serve as an introduction to design thinking, problem solving, the Lexington community, and the University of Kentucky.
Admission
Admission into the Summer Career Discovery Program is regulated through a selective admission procedure. Participants are selected according to the merit of their cumulative GPA, the quality of their statement of interest, and the strength of their recommendations (see application for directions).
Upon acceptance into the program, you will be required to pay a $1500 tuition fee (unless you have been awarded a scholarship) that will cover all program costs including tuition, housing, food, and tours. Upon receipt of the tuition fee you will be mailed a packet with additional details about the program, and release forms.

Participants will share a room with another Summer Career Discovery participant. Typical dorm rooms are furnished with two twin beds, two desks, two chairs, a chest of drawers and a trashcan. The dorm rooms do not have activated phone lines, however there are phones available at the dormitory’s front desk and the College of Design.
University of Kentucky dormitories have 24-hour front desk coverage where attendants provide information and security. In addition, participants will be supervised by a chaperone who will reside in the dorm. Male and female participants are housed on different floors of the building. Linens and laundry facilities are provided. Wireless Internet is available on much of UK’s campus, including Pence Hall.

The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet, Sergei Radchenko, sought to realize his vision of a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet.
Leading dancers from across Russia have forged under Radchenko's direction an exciting new company staging new productions of timeless classics such as Giselle, Don Quixote, Paquita and Carmen.
Since its inception, the Moscow Festival Ballet has completed two tours of Europe, with extraordinary receptions in Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. Two tours of the United Kingdom, including capacity audiences at London's famed Coliseum, have resulted in re-engagements.
The company has also performed with great success in Turkey at the Istanbul Festival and in Greece at the Athens Festival, and recently completed a two-month tour of Japan, Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. Under the direction of Sergei Radchenko, the Moscow Festival Ballet continues to expand its repertoire. In addition to commissioning new works from within Russia and abroad, the company specializes in Twentieth Century full-length ballets such as Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, Legend of Love, Stone Flower and The Golden Age.
The Company returns to the United States in the 2011-2012 season for a four month coast to coast tour.

What: Mosaic art, one of the world's oldest art forms, is experiencing a major revival both in the United States and internationally. The Society of American Mosaic Artists proudly presents "Mosaic Arts International" (MAI), a juried exhibition that explores the very best work of this revival. This is the shocking news revealed to the Baker and his wife by their neighbor, the Witch. Furthermore, the ingredients for the potion happen to be a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. And where are they to go to acquire these unique items? 'Into the woods' of course. Come along with some of your favorite, fairy tale characters as they pursue what they believe will allow them to live "happily ever after." Observe the lengths to which they are willing to go to get what they want. Watch as they reap the consequences of their actions and ultimately recognize the necessity for community responsibility. You may change your mind about the presumed innocence in the tales we tell our children.

Try Teaching
Eastern Kentucky University's "Try Teaching" program, in its seventh year, is accepting applications from mid- and second-career professionals who are considering a return to college for a degree in teaching.
The program allows participants to gauge their comfort level as a classroom teacher before making a life-changing career move.
The program, funded by a $175,000 grant from Covington-based Ashland Inc., has attracted 44 participants in its first six years. Each spent one or two weeks in a K-12 classroom, gaining firsthand experience as they assisted in the preparation and execution of lesson plans while learning successful educational practices from their teaching mentors.
Participants have the option of one- or two-week placements in middle and high schools throughout Central and southeastern Kentucky, as close to home as possible.
In addition to classroom time with a mentoring teacher, program participants spend time with a university-level educator to learn more about certification procedures, the teaching profession and career benefits.

"August: Osage County"
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 20, 2012) − The University of Kentucky Department of Theatre family will come together to present the Pulitzer Prize winning dark comedy "August: Osage County." The play, which follows a dysfunctional family through tragedy and the airing of their dirty laundry, brings together a "family" of UK theatre students and alumni on the Guignol Theatre stage. "August: Osage County" runs from Feb. 23 through March 4.
UK has added two performances of "August: Osage County" to their regular run. The play will take the stage 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23-25 and March 1-3, and 2 p.m. Feb. 26, March 3 and March 4. MSNBC's "The Dylan Ratigan Show" will be making a stop at the University of Kentucky on Wednesday, Feb. 22, as part of the show's "30 Million Jobs Tour."
The show, which airs live on MSNBC from 4 to 5 p.m. ET, will be taking place in the atrium of the UK College of Pharmacy Building on Limestone. Students are encouraged to attend the live shoot and may be invited to answer interview questions on camera. Members of the campus community are invited to watch onsite.
The "30 Million Jobs Tour" was launched in January as "an innovative road show that will examine the roots of our current unemployment crisis and solutions to unleash growth," according a statement from the show's producers. "The tour builds on the show’s commitment to spark conversation and engage Americans in the solution to our nation’s most-pressing problems."

UK Offers New Childcare Facility
We are pleased and excited to announce that Child Development Centers of the Bluegrass (CDCB) will be opening a center on campus in August 2012, with spaces available to University of Kentucky faculty, staff, and students. The facility is the result of a collaboration between CDCB, Kentucky Medical Services Foundation, Inc., and UK HealthCare. The center will be located at 290 Alumni Drive, and will offer a full-day preschool program for both typically developing children and children with special needs. CDCB is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is Four-Star Rated in Kentucky's voluntary STARS for Kids Now quality rating system.
The new facility will have space to serve 166 children, ranging in age from 6 weeks through 5 years (pre-kindergarten). More than 100 of these new spaces will be made available to University of Kentucky faculty, staff, and students. Space availability is limited by the class sizes at each age level - infant, toddler and preschool. CDCB will continue to serve children with special needs in the community as well as families who are already affiliated with the center.
Interested individuals should fill out the online UK Intent to Apply form, available at www.cdcbg.org (see UK Intent to Apply link), in order to be eligible for priority consideration. As demand is anticipated to exceed available space, interested individuals are encouraged to submit the form as soon as possible. The deadline for priority consideration is March 23, 2012. After this date, the application process will be opened up to the public.
UK parents applying through the priority process will be notified of their status no later than May 1. Those offered a space in the center will be required to complete a full application in order to reserve that space.

What: The state Department of Revenue offers free assistance at its 10 Taxpayer Service Centers across the state.
Where: Locations are in Ashland, Bowling Green, Corbin, Florence, Frankfort, Hopkinsville, Louisville, Owensboro, Paducah and Pikeville.
When: Help is available Tuesdays to Thursdays, but appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-800-906-9887 any weekday.
Who: Assistance is limited to people with annual incomes generally below $50,000.

J Cole and Gym Class Heroes in Concert
UK's Student Activities Board has announced J. Cole and Gym Class Heroes as the headliners for the 2012 Spring Concert 8 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in Memorial Coliseum.
Event tickets go on sale for University of Kentucky students only beginning Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Student Center Ticket Office. Students must have a valid UK ID in order to purchase a student ticket. Students may bring up to four (4) additional valid UK student IDs including their own to purchase a total of five (5) student tickets. Students will be able to purchase general public tickets with their student ID beginning Wednesday, Feb. 15. There is a limit of four (4) general public tickets per student ID. The closed sale will conclude on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Tickets will go on sale for the general public on Thursday, Feb. 23, through Ticketmaster.

Super Sunday College Event
The Kentucky Community & Technical College System is hosting its second Super Sunday event on Feb. 12. The 16 KCTCS colleges and the KCTCS System Office are joining forces with black churches and community leaders hoping to present a united front in changing how minorities see higher education in Kentucky.
The Kentucky event will be held in churches in the communities where the colleges are located. The BCTC fair will be at Consolidated Baptist Church, 1625 Russell Cave Road, Lexington; St. James AME Church, 124 East Walnut Street, Danville; and First Baptist Church, 37 North Highland Avenue, Winchester. BCTC has campuses all three cities. KCTCS is hosting an event at Evergreen Baptist Church, 749 Florida St., in Lexington, and First Baptist Church in Versailles.

Money for Ky. students in health fields
The Lexington Clinic Foundation’s Fergus Hanson Memorial Scholarship just might be for you. It is awarded to students enrolled in allied health-related training programs such as nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy or maybe a clinical lab technician, said Ginny Van Horne, community liaison for the foundation. Students hoping to become dentists, veterinarians or medical doctors are not eligible.
The foundation awarded 11 scholarships last year, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 each, divided over two semesters, Van Horne said.
“We are looking for people who will stay in Kentucky,” she said. “We are targeting students in Central and Eastern Kentucky because, traditionally, Lexington Clinic serves that area.”
THERE IS NO AGE LIMIT, so I encourage displaced workers who are pursuing careers in allied health to join high school seniors in applying. Or maybe the scholarship would be just the life preserver needed to keep a student in school. Applicants can be full or part-time students.

MLK's Dream, Barack Obama, and the Myth of a Post-Racial Society
Can We Yet Hope for a New Narrative?
This lecture will be presented by Rodney Coates, professor of sociology and gerontology, Miami University.
Lecture description: Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech galvanized the hopes and dreams of millions of Americans regardless of race, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, class or handicap. In this dream, the essence of the American creed was reaffirmed by requiring that we judge a person “by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.” But as the guns wielded by those who hate continue to kill, as unrest continues to produce chaos in the Middle East, as children slaves are being sold in Darfur, as the poor continue to be over represented in prisons and under represented in our college classrooms, as women continue to be denied equal pay and rights, and as those who look different from ourselves are dismissed, ridiculed and denied basic freedoms, then we must question just how far we have come toward the realization of the dream.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Journalist Eugene Robinson is the University of Louisville's keynote speaker for the 2012 Phi Beta Kappa Lecture.
Eugene Robinson writes a twice-a-week column on politics and culture for the Washington Post, contributes to the PostPartisan blog, and hosts a weekly online chat with readers. In 2009, he received the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for “his eloquent columns on the 2008 presidential campaign that focus on the election of the first African-American president, showcasing graceful writing and grasp of the larger historic picture.” Mr. Robinson’s lecture will concern his most recent book, Disintegration: The Splintering of Black America (2010), a study of the current fracturing of the African American populace into four quite different, and too often detached, socio-economic groups. He is also the author of Last Dance in Havana (2004), and Coal to Cream: A Black Man’s Journey Beyond Color to an Affirmation of Race (1999).

Powell is a longtime resident of Brooklyn, N.Y., and it is from his base in New York City that Powell has published 10 books, including his most recent collection of essays, "Open Letters to America" (Soft Skull Press). Next up for Powell is “Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, and the Ghost of Dr. King: Blogs and Essays” (Fall 2011); and his long-awaited memoir of his childhood and youth, “The Education of Kevin Powell” (Fall 2012).

Exhibit Description: The NECESSARY! exhibit is over 200 artifacts on the life and legacy of Malcolm X. NECESSARY! takes a fresh and bold approach to teaching the legacy of Malcolm X in America through original letters, handbills, photographs, newspapers, magazines, figurines, and other memorabilia. The artifacts are displayed chronologically starting with items from slavery that build a context around what produced a revolutionary mind such as Malcolm X in America and ends with Malcolm X's influence on the powerful conscious voices in hip hop culture. Some of the highlights of the exhibit include: one page from the Alex Haley typewritten interview with Malcolm X for Playboy magazine signed by Malcolm X, the original lynching photograph from Marion, Indiana that inspired the song "Strange Fruit", an original letter written by Elijah Muhammad, a handbill advertising Malcolm X speaking in Washington, DC, Black Panther newspapers showing Malcolm X's influence, and original hip hop artifacts from KRS One and Public Enemy.
Lecture Description: Professor Griff is an American rapper and spoken word artist. He is a member of the Hip-Hop group Public Enemy and head of the Security of the First World. When Public Enemy was formed and signed to Def Jam, Ridenhour invited Griffin to be a sideman. Unity Force was renames “The Security of the First World”, or S1W for short. The S1W’s were brought along, and became a curious combination of bodyguards/ dancers for the band. Their stage routines were a loose combination of martial arts, military drill and “step show” dances lifted from black college fraternities. His role was also the “Minister of Information”, the intellectual public face of the band for interviews etcetera, as Flavor Flav was the “fun” one. He was rarely MC’ing except between songs. Professor Griff has started to emerge on the conspiracy theory scene, typically New World Order conspiracy theory. He is known for linking these allegations to past and present celebrities and well-known figures. Professor Griff’s lecture will focus on Malcolm X's influence on Public Enemy and other conscious hip hop artists.

Description: Community Cinema is an outreach project that shows Independent Lens documentaries in the community and has a panel discussion following each film. We show a film every third Thursday of the month at Arts Place in downtown Lexington. Our film for February 16th is titled More Than a Month and it follows Shukree Hassan Tilghman, a 29-year-old African American filmmaker, on a cross-country tongue-in-cheek campaign to end Black History Month. Who would have thought an object as simple as a DOOR, could be the focus for an art collection. Doors are generally used for their obvious purpose, yet their unforeseen avenues of symbolism in our lives, from past to present, sadness to happiness and finally a new profound lease on life are unconsciously overlooked.
Michigan artist, Minerva Evans, crafted her beautiful Doors exhibit from reused doors- embracing their many imperfections, as is life’s journey. Through her use of fabric, acrylic paint and decorative items she created larger than life images of beautifully dressed African women. Ms. Evans acknowledges the struggle that women of African descent have endured over time in this incredibly constructed exhibition.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters to Close Without Donations
Without significant help from the public, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass will have to shut its doors for good, the group announced Friday.
Members of the public are urged to donate whatever they can afford at an emergency fund set up at Central Bank.
Friday was scheduled to be the last day of operations for the non-profit, which matches boys and girls with older mentors, after board members voted to close earlier this week. Several private donors stepped in just hours before the doors were set to close for good.
The donors bought two weeks at most, said Alan Stein, recently retired president and chief executive officer for the Lexington Legends minor-league baseball team. He was one of the private donors.
Stein said he hopes donations from the public can buy a few more weeks until the Bowl For Kids' Sake, the organization's biggest yearly fund-raising event. The group rents office space at 1016 Rushwood Court.
Bendrea Wilson, a former manager for Big Brothers Big Sisters, put the first nail in the group's coffin when she embezzled more than $435,000 from the organization in 2009, Stein said. She pleaded guilty in federal court and was sentenced to four years in prison.
"We've never been able to recover from that," he said. "We don't have the money to keep the lights on."

Presenter Myra Beth Bundy is a professor of psychology at Eastern Kentucky University and co-director of EKU’s Autism Spectrum Disorder Certificate Program. Co-presenter Bev Harp is an educational specialist for the Supported Higher Education Project, a master of social work candidate in the UK College of Social Work, and a national and international speaker on autism. As a self-advocate, Harp speaks out frequently for respect and inclusion for all people on the autism spectrum.

Cheap Seats at UK
Cheap Seats is a long-running movie series that brings new releases to students for only $1! Cheap Seats gives students the chance to see recent movies on campus before they are released on DVD. Transy to host MLK event
Transylvania University will mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Thursday with a free public event, The Dream Alive Program, featuring Joe Rogers, former lieutenant governor of Colorado.
The presentation will be at 7 p.m. in Haggin Auditorium in the Mitchell Fine Arts Center.
During the program, Rogers will provide commentary on King's life and legacy.
A news release from Transylvania said that the program "is an effort to help increase the understanding of the enormous contributions that King imparted to the nation and a reminder that his wisdom and vision are timeless."
Rogers was the nation's youngest lieutenant governor and the fourth black in U.S. history to serve as a lieutenant governor. He served on the National Commission on the Voting Rights Act and is now a speaker, lecturer and attorney in Colorado.

Lyric’s Little Dresses for Lexington
Monday, January 16, 2012 @ 6pm
The Lyric Theatre will implement our first social service project- Lyric’s Little Dresses for Lexington- to benefit underprivileged girls in Lexington. By the end of the 7 month program, we hope to clothe 250 of Lexington’s disadvantaged little girls. These simple summer dresses, created from pillow cases and ribbons, will bring pride and coverage for young girls who may not always feel such emotions.
To become involved in this social service program, please contact Rasheedah El-Amin, Cultural Arts Coordinator at 859-280-2201 or culturalarts@lexingtonlyric.com. We are currently accepting pillow case donations in all sizes, along with ribbons. To make a donation, please deliver to: Lyric Theatre 300 E. Third Street, Lexington, KY 40508.

TITLE: Administrative Assistant
UNIT/TEAM: National Emergency Management Association
LOCATION: Lexington, Kentucky
DUTIES: Provides primary administrative support and day-to-day office management for National Emergency Management Association (NEMA). Serves as initial point of contact for the NEMA office. Administers
membership database; membership dues invoicing, tracking and reporting; answers member inquiries and coordinates response with appropriate NEMA staff; accounts payable, accounts receivable and financial
reporting. Maintains compendium of financial records. Responsible for conference registrations, invoicing and payment tracking, and supervises on-site registration/office logistics and support. General correspondence,
mailings, and filing; maintains association directory and updates monthly. Coordinates staff schedules. Assists with maintenance of association web site(s) (www.nemaweb.org)(www.emacweb.org).
Provides direct support to the NEMA Executive Director. Also provides administrative support for the
Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), federal grant projects and other special projects and
activities as assigned.
EDUCATION: High School Degree required with three years experience in office administration; Bachelors
Degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Expert word processing skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Extensive database administration experience is required.. Limited travel required. Successful candidate will be customer service
oriented, dependable and a self-starter who can work both independently and as part of a team.
STARTING SALARY RANGE: $32,134 - $38,500
BENEFITS:
Benefits include major medical, dental and vision plans, life and disability insurance, and retirement plan. Paid vacation and sick leave, as well as paid holidays are part of the overall benefits package.
