Constant Star
By Tazewell Thompson
September 11 – October 5, 2008
Ida B. Wells was a passionate, uncompromising, fiery champion of equality for women and black Americans. Wells was a suffragette, newspaper editor and publisher, co-founder of the NAACP, political candidate, mother, wife, and the single most powerful leader in the anti-lynching campaign in America. The music is unforgettable. Thompson weaves 20 classic spirituals sung a capella in five-part harmony into the stirring story of Wells’ brave life. An energetic, unsparing, illuminating and humorous play with music.
