MATCHING! Savings Account

United Way offers savings account matching program

The United Way of the Bluegrass has unveiled a program that matches savings for qualified people to help them buy homes, go back to school or start their own businesses.

The Back on Track program, which began in January, asks those enrolled to save up to $2,000. The United Way will then match the savings 2-to-1, so qualified people who enroll can wind up with up to $6,000.

People whose incomes qualify them for the program must deposit savings in what's called individual development accounts, which are administered locally by Traditional Bank, said Burke. The quickest the savings can be accumulated is six months and the maximum time is two years, though a one-year extension is offered.

Participants must take 10 hours of financial literacy classes and eight hours of classes specific to their goal of owning a home, enhancing their educations or starting a small business.

The United Way is hosting one such financial literacy course Thursday. It is open to anyone, not just those in the program. It's being held in partnership with the state Department of Financial Institutions during what's called America Saves Week nationwide.

Once the program participants' savings are matched, the total amount is issued as a check to a third party for the purpose the person chose.

The funding for Back on Track comes from a federal grant the organization received, said communications coordinator Townsend Miller.

The United Way of the Bluegrass has enough funding for 425 individuals or families. Six people are enrolled and eight more are qualified, Burke said.

February 18, 19, 23-26

Berea College Theatre Laboratory Production
Adanma Onyedike directs “The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World” at 8 p.m. in McGaw Theatre (Jelkyl Drama Center)

“The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World” is a 1990 play by Suzan-Lori Parks. Widely considered to be Parks' masterpiece, this play brings to life a menagerie of stereotypes of African Americans. The "last man" of the title is named “Black Man with Watermelon.” He dies multiple deaths over the course of the show. Other characters include Ham, Queen Hatshepsut, Before Columbus, Prunes and Prisms, and Black Woman with Fried Drumstick. These names comment on history and historians in fractured, repetitive, experimental language that evokes jazz. Sponsored by Berea College Theatre Laboratory.

Structural Racism: Inequality in America Today

What: The Inaugural Lassiter Distinguished Visiting Professor Conference
When: February 25, 2011
Where: University of Kentucky Boone Faculty Center
Keynote Speaker: John A. Powell, Kirwan Institute

About the conference:
The College of Law is proud to host the Inaugural Lassiter Distinguished Visiting Professor Conference. Professor William M. Wiecek, Congdon Professor of Public Law and Professor of History at Syracuse University College of Law, and the Inaugural James and Mary Lassiter Distinguished Visiting Professor at UK Law, will lead this interdisciplinary exploration of structural racism.

Structural racism appears in our dependence on local property taxes for public school funding, or reliance on social networks to spread information about job openings, or subjective decision-making in the workplace, or a housing market that is driven by unconscious stereotypes, or the on-going exclusion of domestic and farm workers from Social Security benefits. Each example appears on the surface to be race-neutral. Yet their outcomes consistently disadvantage people of color.

The goal of the conference is to engage in a cross-disciplinary exploration of structural racism in order to enable cross-disciplinary action to dismantle structural racism.

All UK schools and colleges, as well as the wider Lexington and Kentucky community, are invited to this interdisciplinary exploration on structural racism.

A Question of Color

A Question of Color is the first documentary to confront a painful and long taboo subject: the disturbing feelings many African Americans harbor about themselves and their appearance. African American filmmaker Kathe Sandler digs into the often subconscious world of "color consciousness," a caste system based on how closely skin color, hair texture and facial features conform to a European ideal.

Little Rock Nine: Integration and the State of the US Educational System

Join the Freedom Center for a panel discussion on the Little Rock Nine: Integration and the State of the US Educational System.

September 25, 1957, became a historic day in the nation when nine courageous children risked their lives to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Confronted by a hostile crowd and escorted by the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne, they shouldered the burden of integrating a then segregated public school system.

Carlotta Wells LaNeir, the youngest member of the Little Rock Nine, will be sharing her experiences before and after the integration of Central High School, as well as her observations about the current state of the educational system as it relates to whether or not the United States' public school systems have lived up to the promise of Brown v. Board of Education.
