The Invisible Line: Three American Families and the Secret Journey from Black to White

Date: Tuesday, May 17
Location: Joseph-Beth Booksellers
Time: 7 p.m.

The Invisible Line: Three American Families and the Secret Journey from Black to White, is a multigenerational history of race in American life. It follows three families who started out as African American and crossed the color line and assimilated into white communities at different points in American history.

The book has a strong Kentucky history component. One of the families, the Gibsons, included wealthy landowners who split their time between Lexington/Versailles and their sugar plantations southwest of New Orleans. A second family, the Spencers, were subsistence farmers in the mountains of eastern Kentucky (Clay and Johnson counties).

Forgiveable Foreclosure HELP

The Kentucky Unemployment Bridge Program, established through the federal Hardest Hit Fund to help unemployed and underemployed homeowners avoid foreclosure, is a first-come, first-served forgivable loan of up to $20,000 that can be used to pay delinquent house notes or current ones.

Applicants must have experienced a job loss or pay decrease since January, 2009 through no fault of their own, and they have to have dipped into their resources, down to the equivalent of a maximum of six months of house payments, said Brenda Weaver, chief program and policy officer at the Kentucky Housing Corporation. Those resources do not include retirement or pension funds.

Kentucky is one of 18 states and the District of Columbia chosen to participate in the program, based on unemployment statistics and decline in home values, Weaver said. Kentucky received nearly $149 million to help those in need.

Discount pet vaccination clinic to be May 5

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department's annual Rabies Vaccination Clinic will be 6 to 9 p.m. May 5 at the Third Street Fire Station, 219 East Third Street. Vaccinations will be $3. Cats must be in a carrier and dogs must be on a leash.

Rabies is a viral disease of humans, pets and wild animals, transmitted from animals to humans by the saliva of a rabid animal, usually from a bite.

"This annual clinic gives Lexington pet owners a great way to get a low-cost rabies vaccination for their pets," said Luke Mathis, Environmental Health team leader and one of the event's organizers. "This is an ideal event for pet owners who don't have a regular veterinarian or who want to save money on a rabies vaccination." Rabies vaccinations typically cost about $20.

State law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets maintain a current rabies vaccination, and every health department in the state must hold a public clinic at least once a year. The health department gave 499 rabies shots during the May 2010 clinic.

The LFCHD Rabies Control Program received 854 animal bite reports last year.

Owners may also purchase an animal license at the clinic. It costs $8 if the animal has been spayed or neutered or $40 if the animal has not been fixed or the owner has no proof of alteration.

The Lexington Humane Society and the Lexington-Fayette County Animal Care & Control are also sponsoring the clinic. For more information call the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department's Division of Environmental Health at (859) 231-9791.

"Nevertheless: A Story of Resolve"

The play centers around one woman’s courageous battle after receiving startling news. It is a story of hope and perseverance in the midst of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Her story is YOUR story. You will laugh, cry, and be renewed.

The vision for this play is multidimensional. One, it is to encourage those who struggle with their faith. Have you ever questioned why you are faced with certain trials? Have you ever wondered when the storm will end? Secondly, it is to educate the community about breast cancer and to encourage women and men to be tested. A representative from the Susan G. Komen Foundation will be at each performance to answer questions and disseminate information about breast cancer awareness. Lastly, it is philanthropic in scope. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Step By Step Ministries, a non-profit organization for young single mothers.

Come join us for five exhilarating performances at the University of Kentucky’s Memorial Hall on:

April 22 @ 7:00 p.m.*

Dr. Price is truly one of our stars here at UK--having earned both a PhD and JD, her doctoral dissertation was awarded the 2007 best dissertation award from the Race, Ethnicity, and Politics section of the American Political Science Association. She works on one of the most crucial issues of our time: race and punishment in the criminal justice system, and is working on a book titled "At The Cross: Race, Religion, and Citizenship in the Politics of the Death Penalty Among African Americans. Scholarship is not just researching, writing, and publishing for Professor Price: she has long been committed to action--in the academy, in the prisons, and in the street. Come out to meet and discuss MLK's work with Dr. Price; come out to hear more about her work; come out to share your perspective; come out to meet beautiful, thoughtful, engaged people from throughout our community.

No matter what else we might do, we have to create spaces where we can come together, discuss our issues from our own perspectives, hear each other, and build visions and action for the future. Let's create that space together...

Love Letters

Starring Alicia Helm and Everett McCorvey

The University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts will present its first collegewide event as it stages A.R. Gurney's poignant work "Love Letters" featuring local celebrities Alicia Helm and Everett McCorvey, of UK Opera Theatre. The production, a college fundraiser for faculty research, will grace the Guignol Theatre stage 7:30 p.m., April 29 and 30.

A Pulitzer Prize nominee, "Love Letters" centers on just two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, whose friendship and ill-fated romance takes them from elementary school through adolescence, maturity and into middle age. Gardner and Ladd sit side-by-side and read the notes, letters and cards amassed during their nearly 50 years as a couple. The story of the pair's relationship gradually unfolds from what is written - and what is left unsaid.

Tickets for "Love Letters" are $75 for general admission and a dessert reception. Premier admission will be available for $150 for the April 30 showing, and will include a pre-show buffet, music, an art exhibition viewing, premium seating and a dessert reception. A processing fee will be added to online ticket sales only. Tickets can be purchased through the Singletary Center Ticket Office at (859) 257-4929, online at www.singletarytickets.com, or in person at the ticket office.

North

The for/word company, co-founded by Christina Ritter, lecturer at the University of Kentucky Department of Theatre, brings the original work "North," on the life of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, to Lexington for a limited weekend engagement April 7-10, at the Downtown Arts Center (DAC). This is the company's Kentucky debut.

Called "wistful, poetic, and wise" by the Chicago Tribune, "North" tells the story of a charged meeting between writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife to aviator Charles, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the man whom she felt best understood her work.

As Anne's character says in the play, "This story is fiction and not biography." Yet, "North" is based in the historical record. In keeping with the for/word company’s creative technique, "North" is constructed exclusively from Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s letters and journals, poetic memoirs, fiction and poetry, and wartime polemics. It also draws from material written by her husband, Charles Lindbergh and by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, including his poetic works on flight, his journals and letters, and his famous children’s book.

Tax Info!

As the tax deadline of April 18th draws near, my office would like to pass along a few online tax resources that may expedite your filing process. The IRS website has a host of online tools to help you submit your tax information, track your refund, and more. Keep in mind the following things for this 2011 tax season:

*Updated Tax Tips 2011 page on the IRS website.

*Cut down on the paperwork. If you make less than $58,000 gross income, you can use the IRS’ new tool called Freefile that allows you to file your tax forms online without the hassle of mailing.

*Track your refund. Where’s My Refund? is an online tool that allows taxpayers to track your refunds. To get your refund faster through setting up direct deposit, click here.

*Tax credits for small businesses. In response to the recession, Congress implemented new tax credits to spur economic growth and recovery. The Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 created additional tax credits for small businesses. Click here to see if your small business qualifies for any of these new tax provisions.

*Tax credits for students. Parents and students may qualify for the American Opportunity Credit that may be claimed for the first four years of college expenses. Taxpayers are eligible for full credit if they are individuals earning less than $80,000 a year, or a couple earning $160,000 or less. Even if you make above these levels, you may qualify for a partial tax credit. For more information, click here.

*Understand the Earned Income Tax Credit. Earned income is the taxable wages and income you receive from working or owning your own business. To see if your earnings fall into this category, click here. Individuals earning less than $43,352 and couples earning $48,362 with children may qualify for The Earned Income Tax Credit. To see if you qualify, use the IRS’ Earned Income Tax Credit Assistant. To claim the Earned Income Tax Credit, you need to fill out Form 8862.

*You may qualify for free tax assistance. For low- and middle-income taxpayers with an annual income of $49,000 or less, you may qualify for free tax help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. If you make less than $49,000 a year and believe your tax questions cannot be handled over the phone, you can visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center for free face-to-face tax help. Use the IRS’ Office Locator to find a center nearest you.

*Know how unemployment benefits are taxed. Unemployment compensation received from the government is taxable as income. If you have received unemployment compensation during the year, you will be given a Form 1099-G indicating the amount you were paid. This amount must be included in your income. If you have received unemployment benefits, you may decide to have federal income tax withheld by filling out a Form W-4V.
