The KWWC is an annual event known for bringing notable women writers to Lexington for readings, writing workshops and discussions. The conference will run Sept.15–18, at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning and several additional evening venues. Online registration for the conference is now open, but is not a requirement for entering its contests.

KWWC’s first annual Prize for Woman Playwrights has secured internationally renowned playwright and Kentucky native Naomi Wallace to serve as final judge. The prize carries a $500 cash award and a fully staged theatrical production at Balagula Theatre in Lexington, where it will be produced as a world premiere in early 2012. Joining Wallace on the judging panel are Balagula Theatre co-artistic directors Ryan Case and Natasha Williams, Lexington Herald-Leader theater critic Candace Chaney, Peabody Award-winning screenwriter and playwright and University of Kentucky Assistant Professor of Playwriting Herman Farrell III, and KWWC director Julie Wrinn. A winner of this playwriting award will be announced on Sept. 1, 2011.

The KWWC staff is also accepting entries for their annual Betty Gabehart Prize, to be judged by its Board of Advisors. Three prizes will be awarded as part of the contest in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Each winner will receive $200, two 2-day passes to the conference, and the opportunity to read her winning manuscript at this year’s conference on Friday or Saturday, Sept. 16 or 17. Manuscripts must also be postmarked by July 1. Winners will be notified and announced on the KWWC website by Aug. 12.

Police join Click It or Ticket program

The Lexington Division of Police will join local and national law enforcement officers and highway safety advocates all across the country for the 2011 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization, May 23-June 5.

During the mobilization, officers will be cracking down on motorists who fail to wear their seat belts – both day and night.

Because nighttime passenger vehicle occupants are among those least likely to buckle up and most likely to die in crashes when unrestrained, nighttime enforcement has become a priority of the Click It or Ticket mobilization. Of those who died in nighttime crashes in 2009, nearly two-thirds (62 percent) were not wearing seat belts at the time of their fatal crashes.

Scholarship -Deadline Approaching Soon!

The deadline to apply for the Robert Henry Hughes Memorial Scholarship is May 31, and takers are few.

The $1,000 scholarship, administered through Fayette County Judge-Executive Jon Larson's office, gives recipients $500 a semester and is renewable each year as long as the student maintains a 3.0 grade-point average.

Deputy Judge-Executive Stephen McFayden, who has been assigned to get the word out, said he has visited most Fayette County high schools and spoken with guidance counselors.

There is $35,000 available, he said, not including money that has been set aside for recipients who have maintained the required grade-point average.

Applicants need to submit a "hand-written essay" describing their accomplishments or need for the scholarship. The "hand-written" part might be the most difficult for some students in this age of computers.

The scholarship will be given equally to black and white students, McFayden said, according to the wishes of Hughes, who left $100,000 in his will to fund the scholarship.

Hughes died in 1935. He was biracial, with a black mother, Ellen Davis, and white father, John T. Hughes, a wealthy horseman and landowner.

Applications are available in counselor's offices at local high schools, McFayden said. Students also may email him at mcfaydengroup@gmail.com or call (859) 255-1001, and an application will be mailed to them. Remember, the deadline is May 31.

Whats Going On? (Stop Violence, Stop The Silence)

Since December of 2010, Lexington, KY has witnessed a spike in crime and a rash of homicides and shootings with the victims being young, African American males. If that isn't enough, we have people that have witnessed these crimes & refuse to speak out because of the perverted use of the "no snitching" mantra. On top of that, very few news outlets, politicians, athletes, and most importantly (because of our close ties to the s...treets) hip hop artists have not drawn these murders together to form a bigger picture & are not speaking out to OUR community about whats going on. Well The Devine Experience & Devassa will attempt to do our part in speaking out through ART!

The Devine Experience presents "Whats Going On?"

Theme: STOP THE VIOLENCE & STOP THE SILENCE

Date:Saturday May 21st
Time: 9pm-11
Location: Devassa Bar & Cafe, Victorian Square Lexington, KY
Cost: $5 cover (proceeds going to Brian Carr's fam.) & additional donations excepted.
Program: A FEW SPEAKERS FROM OUR COMMUNITY, live band, live art, spoken word, neo sol, hip hop and more all performing pieces centered around uplifting our community & stopping the violence!DJ Johnnie Johnson on the 1's & 2's after the event.

Devine Carama, D. Page, Jaria Gordon, Courtney & Cole Campbell, Jaria Gordon, Truth B. Told, Jeremiah Muwanga and more have confirmed as performers.

Let's come together that night and celebrate life & honor the dead. Let's uplift our community through the talents that God gave us. Let's pack Devassa out & show this city that we can come out in droves for something positive as well. Think about the tragedies in the last few weeks and just ask youself "Whats Going On?" And what do YOU intend on doing about it?

Safe Sitter Classes

Kentucky Children's Hospital (KCH) hosts Safe Sitter classes on June 29-30 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. to help babysitters handle any situation that may arise. Safe Sitter is a medically accurate, hands-on class that teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children.

"The children that take this class not only learn basic childhood care, such as feeding, play, and toileting, but they also learn how to respond to emergencies," said Stacie Trent, divisional charge nurse for KCH. "We teach the students how to respond to mild, moderate or severe emergencies by handling it themselves, calling a neighbor, or calling 911."

KCH first became involved with the program more than 20 years ago, and the classes are led today by six of their pediatric nurses.

Safe Sitters learn:

What to do when a child chokes;
How to stay safe while sitting;
How to call for emergency help;
Babysitting business skills;
Basic child care skills: diapering, feeding, etc.; and
How to entertain children and keep them safe.

Classes are held at 181 Lowry Lane and cost $30. To pre-register your son, daughter or babysitter call Stacie Trent at (859) 269-6357 or e-mail srgree0@email.uky.edu. The deadline to register is June 18.

"Let Resistance Be Your Motto"

at The Underground Railroad Center

With the initial rallying cry of abolitionist Henry Highland Garnet, “Let your motto be Resistance! Resistance! RESISTANCE! No oppressed people have ever secured their liberty without resistance”, African Americans specifically have been inspired to rise up and emancipate themselves.

Let Your Motto Be Resistance: African American Portraits highlights individuals whose passion, determination and talent played an influential role in shaping notions of race and status over the past 150 years. With 69 matted and framed modern prints in the traveling exhibition and over 100 portraits in the exhibition catalogue, the exhibition’s focus on the varieties of resistance has inspired visitors of all generations and backgrounds.

Through the selected photographs of photography historian and guest curator Deborah Willis, the diversity of creative and courageous ways in which African Americans resisted, accommodated, redefined, and struggled through American history is impressively reflected not only by the subjects, but by the photographers themselves.

GM adds 250 jobs at Corvette plant in Ky.

General Motors is putting more muscle into making Corvettes.

The automaker said Wednesday it will invest $131 million - and add about 250 jobs - at the south-central Kentucky assembly plant that produces the classic muscle car.

The investment allows GM to produce the next-generation Corvette at the Bowling Green plant. Work to retrofit the site will begin even as the plant continues to assemble the Corvette for the next two model years, including the 2012 version.

Nearly 400 production workers now assemble Corvettes at the factory, the only GM site that builds the car and home to its production since 1981. About 1,000 people were employed at the plant at its peak in the 1980s, said Chevrolet spokesman David Caldwell.

Lyrics by George Howe and James E. Grote

Farmer Brown has a problem – he usually loves the noises on his farm, but ever since those cows found the old typewriter, all day long it’s click, clack, moo – click, clack, moo – clickety, clack, moo! And typing cows are just the beginning. An unusual note launches a milk revolution, and the chickens want in on it too. Did you ever hear of cows that type or farm animals that go on strike? Well, Farmer Brown does not know what to think! His life may get a little less moo-sical, but you and Duck are sure to have a quacking good time!
