University of Kentucky Accelerated BS/BA/MD Program

The B.S./B.A./M.D. Program is a highly selective program developed for a small group of exceptional high school students who plan to pursue a career in medicine. Students accepted into the program will complete a B.S. or B.A. in Biology as well as an M.D. degree in only seven years. While there is no guarantee of admission to the UK College of Medicine, meeting the minimum B.S./B.A./M.D. program expectations, exceptional performance on the MCAT, demonstrated maturity, and continued commitment to the medical field will make students very competitive applicants for admission.

What are the benefits of the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program? This program offers a number of benefits including critical and personalized academic and career advising from select undergraduate faculty, medical school faculty, and professional advisors. Students will be exposed to cutting edge research in the Department of Biology as well as the UK College of Medicine. There are opportunities to meet with or shadow specific practicing physicians in a student’s field of interest. Also, students have access to knowledgeable medical school administration for guidance in regards to the admissions process.

How do I apply for the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program? In order to be eligible to apply for the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program, you must have a minimum of a 31 ACT score or 1360 SAT (M+CR) score and a 3.75 unweighted GPA. The first step to apply for the B.S./B.A./M.D. Program is to submit your general UK Admissions application (www.applyuk.com) or Common Application (www.commonapp.org), and declare biology as your major. Then, you will need to submit the application and essay for the UK competitive academic scholarships (www.uky.edu/AcademicScholarships/files/AcadSchApp.pdf).

Check the box under “College Information” to indicate you are applying for the B.S./M.D. Program. The final step would be to write a supplemental B.S./B.A./M.D. personal essay and submit this with the competitive academic scholarship application (postmarked no later than January 13, 2012). The B.S./B.A./M.D. personal essay (one page maximum) should describe the following:

-Your high school or community activities, leadership positions, special awards, work experiences, and other interests;
-Why you want to become a physician; and
-Why you are interested in the B.S./B.A./M.D. program at the University of Kentucky.

Precious Knowledge

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center presents the local premiere of “Precious Knowledge” with Lexington resident and filmmaker Eren Isabel McGinnis at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, in the Worsham Theatre in the Student Center. McGinnis will take questions from the audience following the screening. Admission is free.

McGinnis’ documentary, “Precious Knowledge,” interweaves the stories of students in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School. The filmmakers spent an entire year in the classroom filming this innovative social justice curriculum, documenting the transformative impact on students who become engaged, informed and active in their communities. While 48 percent of Mexican-American students currently drop out of high school, Tucson High’s Mexican American Studies Program has become a national model of educational success, with 93 percent of enrolled students graduating from high school (average over five years) and 85 percent going on to attend college.

Agape Theatre Troupe presents A Song for Coretta

On February 6, 2006, people began lining up at dawn outside of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church to pay their respects to the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose body lay in state in the small sanctuary. By mid-morning, the crowd wound down the street and around the corner of the old red brick building. At close to midnight, the crowd had dwindled to a determined few. The five fictional characters in this play are at the end of that long line.

A Song for Coretta is a sharp, funny play featuring Helen, a stuffy, old guard Civil Rights activist; Mona Lisa, a jovial but canny artist and Hurricane Katrina survivor; Zora, an enthusiastic Spelman student; Gwen, a U.S. soldier on leave from the war in Iraq, and Keisha, aka "Li'l Bit," a hilariously brash and uncouth high schooler.

Calling All Entrepreneurs Ages 18-24

Intel is partnering with top entrepreneurship colleges such as the University of Kentucky, as well as the University of Michigan, Harvard, Stanford and UC Berkeley in an effort to help spread the word to students about Intel Innovators. The program's goal is to celebrate and support entrepreneurial thinking, collaboration and innovation among 18-to-24-year-olds.

Only ideas with the most Facebook votes will get a shot at winning up to $100,000—no strings attached.

Information on the Intel Innovators contest along with the Submission Guidelines and FAQ can be found here: www.intelinnovators.com.

Agape Theatre Troupe seeks five black women, ages 17-56, for
A SONG FOR CORETTA by Pearl Cleage.

The play will have three performances at the Lexington Opera House on January 27 & 28. Open auditions 6-8 PM Tues. & Wed., Nov. 1 & 2 at Imani Baptist Church, 1555 Georgetown Rd. Cold readings from the script. Info: 361-0654.

ABOUT THE PLAY

On February 6, 2006, people began ligning up at dawn outside of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church to pay their respects to the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose body lay in state in the small sanctuary. By mid-morning, the crowd wound down the street and around the corner of the old red brick building. People of all ages stood patiently for hours, waiting to say goodbye. Sometimes they murmured to each other quietly. Sometimes they shared memories of Mrs. King’s extraordinary life and expressed sorrow at her passing. When a cold rain began to fall at sunset, those who had thought to bring umbrellas shared them with those whose resolve was the only thing not dampened by the drizzle. At close to midnight, the crowd had dwindled to a determined few. The five fictional women in this play are at the end of that long line of mourners.

Pearl Cleage is an Atlanta-based playwright of such plays as Flyin' West, Blues for An Alabama Sky, Bourbon at the Border, Late Bus to Mecca, and Chain. Pearl is also a best selling author whose first novel, What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day, was an Oprah Book Club pick and spent nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Her subsequent novels have been consistent best sellers and perennial book club favorites. I Wish I Had A Red Dress, her second novel, won multiple book club awards in 2001. Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do, was a "Good Morning America!" book club pick in 2003, and Babylon Sisters made the ESSENCE Magazine best seller list in 2005. Her most recent novel, Baby Brother's Blues, was the first pick of the new ESSENCE Book Club and an NAACP Image Award winner for fiction in 2007.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN--Urban Studies and Mass Incarceration

The Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and the Residential
College (RC) at the University of Michigan invite applications for an
associate or full professorship in urban studies beginning
September 1, 2012. This is a university-year appointment. As part of a
cluster hire of up to four faculty, designed to create a ³Detroit
School² of urban studies, we are interested in candidates with research
and teaching interests that focus on how structures of inequality in
declining urban environments, such as Detroit, bear upon patterns of
crime and law enforcement and how policy responses drug laws,
no-tolerance enforcement, sentencing guidelines and the
practice of mass incarceration that has resulted affect individuals,
families, and communities. Candidates need not focus exclusively on
Detroit and its metropolitan area, but an interest in working in a
Detroit-centered research and teaching cluster is essential. We ask that
all candidates consult the full cluster proposal at
http://www.lsa.umich.edu/rc/.

This joint position includes teaching responsibilities in Afroamerican &
African Studies, which has an undergraduate BA and a graduate
certificate program, and in the Residential College, which offers a
four-year liberal arts curriculum. While the field of training is open,
a scholar informed by an interdisciplinary perspective that incorporates
fields such as sociology, history, political economy, criminology, or
anthropology is especially attractive. An ideal candidate would also be
willing to assist in the growth of the Urban Studies minor in the RC,
and the Crime and Justice minor, joint between the RC and the Department
of Sociology. Teaching duties may also include courses in the Semester
in Detroit program, and in
community-based learning experiences in collaboration with other UM
units such as Urban Planning, Social Work, Sociology and the Prison
Creative Arts Project (PCAP), now housed in the RC.

All candidates should send a letter of application, CV, writing sample
(30 pages max), statement of teaching philosophy and experience,
evidence of teaching excellence, a statement of current and future
research plans, and a list of at least three references. Applications
should be addressed to:

Urban Studies Search Committee, Department of Afroamerican and African
Studies, University of Michigan, 4700 Haven Hall, Ann Arbor, MI.
48109-1045 or by email to Faye Portis at fayemp@umich.edu.

The deadline for completed applications is November 15, 2011.

Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The University of Michigan
is supportive of the needs of dual career couples and is an Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.

Lexington Police to Hire 25 New Officers

Mayor Jim Gray announced Thursday that a $3.9 million grant will allow the city to hire 25 officers. It will be the first class of new hires in about two years.

The grant will pay for the officers' training, salaries and benefits for three years. The city is then obligated to keep the officers on for at least one additional year.

Despite some cost to the city once the grant runs out, including equipment and salaries, "it will be a fraction of what it would cost without the grant," city spokeswoman Susan Straub said.

There is no set date, but the hiring process will begin as soon as possible, police Cmdr. Doug Pape said. It takes about a year to get officers completely trained and patrolling on their own.

The 25 new hires will bring the total number of officers to about 549.

Ovarian cancer Screening

Ovarian cancer is ranked 5th among cancer killers for American women. Most women have no symptoms until the disease has progressed toward its advanced stages and as the disease progresses, survival rates sharply drop. However, women can be cured with existing treatment methods if they detect the cancer early. There is a 24-year-long study conducted by the Ovarian Cancer Screening Program that showed annual screening greatly improves early detection and can save lives. Since the program began in 1987, more than 200,000 screenings have been performed on more than 37,000 Kentucky women and they have found more than 447 ovarian tumors and 76 detected malignancies.

The Ovarian Cancer Screening Program offers free screenings and are available at six locations throughout the state that include:

•Markey Cancer Center, 800 Rose Street, UK, Lexington
•Floyd County Health Department, 283 Goble Street, Prestonsburg
•Hardin County Health Department, 580 Westport Rd, Elizabethtown
•Mason County Health Department, 120 West 3rd Street, Maysville
•McCracken County Health Department, 916 Kentucky Avenue, Paducah
•Pulaski County Health Department, 45 Roberts Street, Somerset

The screening procedure is painless and lasts around 15 minutes.

Women are the primary caretakers in many our Kentucky families, but they often put her own well-being below that of their children and spouses. I strongly urge women to take advantage of these free screenings across the state because taking responsibility for our own health will ultimately improve the health of our loved ones.

The Ovarian Cancer Screening Program is open to women age 50 or older, or women over the age of 25 who have a family history of ovarian cancer. For more information, call (859) 323-4687 or (800) 766-8279.

STEVE PERRY: Push Has Come to Shove

An education is something that most students take for granted, but for some children in America it is considered a luxury. Join the Student Activities Board’s Multicultural Affairs Committee in welcoming education advocate Steve Perry as he speaks on how community members can help America's kids get the education they need and deserve at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Memorial Hall. This event is sponsored by the Student Activities Board.

Born into poverty, Perry grew to believe success in life is determined by where you end, not where you start. This philosophy inspired him to transform the lives of poor and minority children by providing them with access to a college education. Perry is best known as the founder of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Conn., which has boasted 100 percent graduation and enrollment in four-year university programs for a period of six years.

In his most recent book, "Push Has Come to Shove," Perry describes what steps need to be taken to transform the educational experience and ensure that all American schools deliver a first-rate education to its kids. Copies of the book will be sold in the University Bookstore located in the Student Center following the event.

Students, faculty and staff can pick up a free ticket at the Student Center ticket office weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are also free to the general public. Tickets will be available for pickup starting Monday, Sept. 26. Contact the ticket office at (859) 257-TICS.

www.uky.edu/FineArts/Art/FineArtsInstitute/registration3.html or by contacting the institute at (859) 257-8151 or by email to jane.andrus@uky.edu.
