Newport Aquarium Salutes Veterans and Active Military

In appreciation for their service, Newport Aquarium would like to invite all veterans and active military personnel to visit during the weekend of November 11-13 for free.

Plus, family members can receive the Aquarium’s everyday military discount of $3 off an adult ticket and $2 off a child ticket. Up to four family-member discounts are allowed per military identification card. Veterans and active military will need to show their military IDs or discharge papers at the Aquarium ticket window to receive the free tickets and discounts. The offer is valid for same-day visits only that weekend.

Ride the Ducks Newport is also getting in on the patriot act. Vets and military can receive half-price tickets for Duck tours from Nov. 9-13, and family members (up to four) can receive $2 off tickets with the military ID/discharge papers. Education in America: An Evening with Dr. Steve Perry

The Student Activities Board’s Multicultural Affairs Committee is proud to welcome CNN’s Education Contributor and best-selling author Dr. Steve Perry to UK's campus as part of our Diversity Dialogues series on Thursday, November 3, 2011.

Dr. Perry is best known as the founder of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, CT which has boasted a 100% graduation and enrollment rate in four-year university programs for a period of six years. He will speak on how teachers, parents, and others can help our children get the education they need and deserve. The lecture will begin at 7pm in Memorial Hall followed by a Q&A session and book signing. Tickets are free for UK faculty, staff, and students and the general public.

Copies of Dr. Perry’s newest book, Push Has Come to Shove: Getting Our Kids the Education They Deserve (Even if it Means Picking a Fight), are available to purchase in the University of Kentucky Bookstore and will be sold at the event.

Free Memory Screenings Available to the Community

The University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging will offer free memory screenings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the UK HealthCare Polk-Dalton Clinic.

The 30-minute screenings are designed to evaluate participants for signs of cognitive impairment or illnesses including Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. All screenings are conducted by trained personnel in a confidential environment. If signs of a memory disorder are found, participants will be given advice for how to seek further care.

The Polk-Dalton Clinic is located at 217 Elm Tree Lane in Lexington. Free parking is available, and a LexTran bus stop is located nearby.

Talib Kweli Raps About Economy, Democracy, Activism

King of New York hip-hop and MC extraordinaire Talib Kweli will share an evening of dialogue about “Hip-Hop and Economic Recovery” with journalist/political analyst Bakari Kitwana on the University of Kentucky campus at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in Memorial Hall.

The provocative, highly interactive one-on-one dialogue will challenge students to think more broadly about employment opportunities, global economics, democracy, diversity, community activism, entrepreneurship, innovation and new models of leadership. Drawing on Kweli’s experiences in the industry as an artist, entrepreneur and innovator, issues such as the state of the hip-hop industry, the future of hip-hop, hip-hop and electoral politics, and the role of art in activism will also be considered.

General admission is $7 to the 90-minute conversation with Kweli and Kitwana, which is co-sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Center; African American and Africana Studies; WRFL-FM; the Stuckert Career Center; the Writing, Rhetoric and Digital Media Program; and the National Association of Black Accountants.

Freedom Riders

The Worldview Film Series, sponsored by the University of Kentucky Martin Luther King, Jr. Cultural Center, gets under way this week with films that focus on two events of enduring impact on the nation’s history and collective psyche.

ThIs week’s feature-length film, “Freedom Riders,” is veteran filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s inspirational documentary about the courageous band of civil rights activists. Gaining impressive access to influential figures on both sides of the issue, Nelson chronicles a chapter of American history that stands as an astonishing testament to the accomplishment of a visionary group of young people willing to organize against all odds. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the Worsham Theater in the Student Center. Facilitator will be Jakobi Williams, UK History Department.

The series continues Tuesday, Nov. 1, with “Mooz-lum,” an independent film released in 2010. Written and directed by Qasim “Q” Basir and starring Danny Glover, “Mooz-lum” tells the story of an African-American Muslim family whose lives are changed forever by 9/11 and its aftermath. Thus far, this film has had limited commercial release. This UK screening at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Worsham Theater marks its regional premiere in central Kentucky. The event is co-sponsored by the UK Islamic Studies Program and the Muslim Students Association.

Admission is free to both films.

The City of Lexington now has an Online Police Reporting System. Using this new online system, citizens can file a report and immediately print a draft copy of the police report for free.

ABOUT THE PLAY

On February 6, 2006, people began ligning up at dawn outside of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church to pay their respects to the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose body lay in state in the small sanctuary. By mid-morning, the crowd wound down the street and around the corner of the old red brick building. People of all ages stood patiently for hours, waiting to say goodbye. Sometimes they murmured to each other quietly. Sometimes they shared memories of Mrs. King’s extraordinary life and expressed sorrow at her passing. When a cold rain began to fall at sunset, those who had thought to bring umbrellas shared them with those whose resolve was the only thing not dampened by the drizzle. At close to midnight, the crowd had dwindled to a determined few. The five fictional women in this play are at the end of that long line of mourners.

Pearl Cleage is an Atlanta-based playwright of such plays as Flyin' West, Blues for An Alabama Sky, Bourbon at the Border, Late Bus to Mecca, and Chain. Pearl is also a best selling author whose first novel, What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day, was an Oprah Book Club pick and spent nine weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Her subsequent novels have been consistent best sellers and perennial book club favorites. I Wish I Had A Red Dress, her second novel, won multiple book club awards in 2001. Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do, was a "Good Morning America!" book club pick in 2003, and Babylon Sisters made the ESSENCE Magazine best seller list in 2005. Her most recent novel, Baby Brother's Blues, was the first pick of the new ESSENCE Book Club and an NAACP Image Award winner for fiction in 2007.

Acclaimed Exhibition "The Horse" On Display at the

From October 22 through April 6, visit the Kentucky Horse Park's International Museum of the Horse and explore the eternal bond between horses and humans at the largest equestrian traveling exhibition ever assembled. "The Horse" portrays the horse's impact on trade, transportation, labor, warfare, culture, and sports. More than 140 artifacts and cultural objects from around the world including a complete Samurai saddle from Japan, a full suit of 15th-century German horse armor, and Native American horse accoutrements will be on display.

The New York Times called this exhibition "charming and illuminating" and "an uplifting example of how horses enrich our lives." The New York Post said, "You absolutely must see it."

Admission to "The Horse" is included with park admission, or a "museums only" ticket may be purchased for $8 for adults or $4 for children ages 7-12, which also includes admission to the entire International Museum of the Horse, the Al Marah Arabian Horse Galleries and the American Saddlebred Museum.

The Alltech National Horse Show Comes to

Founded in 1883 in New York by a group of influential sportsmen, the National Horse Show is America's oldest indoor horse show, firmly established as a major fixture on the national and international sport and social calendars.

The National Horse Show has been held in a number of locations over the years including the original Madison Square Garden, New Jersey's Meadowland's Arena, Wellington, Florida, and Syracuse, New York. At the beginning of 2011, the National Horse Show announced it would relocate to Lexington, KY.

From November 2 - 6, the Alltech National Horse Show will take place in its new home at the Alltech Arena on the beautiful grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park, site of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Performances are open to the public and will feature the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior and Amateur National Championships, the National Horse Show Grand Prix, Hunter events, and the ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay, the crown jewel of equitation for junior riders.

Fifty percent of the net proceeds from the Alltech National Horse Show general admission gate receipts will be donated to the various charities featured each day at the event.

Fair Targets Minorities, Women

Lexington's government is holding its first vendor fair aimed at helping the minority and female-owned companies make connections with city divisions, which are looking to purchase more from them.

The free Minority and Women Business Connection, to be held 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Phoenix Building, at Vine Street and Limestone, will also include presentations from city divisions including Parks and Recreation and General Services on upcoming projects.

UK’s Academic Colleges and Athletic Department will select an African American alumni, faculty, or staff member whose faith, hard work, and determination has positively impacted the lives of people on the UK campus, the city, state or nation.

These individuals will receive the coveted Lyman T. Johnson "Torch of Excellence Award." They will also choose an African American undergraduate within their respective colleges/department whose academic achievement and ability to positively impact the lives of others would warrant him/her to receive the Lyman T. Johnson "Torch Bearer Award."

In an effort to provide more opportunities for consumers to access local foods, Kentucky first lady Jane Beshear and University of Kentucky College of Agriculture Dean Scott Smith unveiled the Kentucky and Local Food Resources Web page today at the American School Health Association meeting in Louisville.

The page, accessed at: www2.ca.uky.edu/foods, provides links to all the UK College of Agriculture’s programs and initiatives related to local foods, as well state and national resources. As part of the page, University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service agents will have the opportunity to develop county Web pages that list their local producers and products. Franklin and Woodford counties will have the first county-specific Web pages developed.

PhotoDay!

Bring your cameras, flashes, strobe lights and a desire to learn more about the art of photography as the University of Kentucky Department of Art presents its second annual PhotoDay this Friday, Oct. 21. The day of festivities centered on all things photography includes lectures, workshops, a talk by world renowned photographer Eric Meola, Light-Up UK and the debut of "Kentucky Next," an art exhibition displaying some of the finest art work from college students around Kentucky. PhotoDay is free and open to the public.

PhotoDay kicks off 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in Reynolds Building No.1. The day features lectures and workshops for those who wish to begin, perfect or demonstrate their picture-taking talents. Lecture topics include a variety of subjects such as job searches in the field of photography, portfolio building, photo history and theory. In addition, the day includes several workshops and demonstrations on working in the darkroom, cyanotypes (a historical process), Adobe Lightroom Photoshop, bookmaking and much more, as well as artist presentations.

The one day photography exhibition, "Kentucky Next," by college students around the state will be on display from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Barnhart Gallery, in Reynolds Building No. 1. Winners of the exhibition will be named at 7 p.m. Awards will be presented by Midwest Campus Exchange and MAC-On-Campus.

YMCA Fall Festival- Volunteers Needed

Are you a students who might be interested in a community service opportunity? In need of service hours for school? The YMCA Fall Festival is on Friday, October 28th. Volunteer
check in is at 5:30 pm and the event is 6-8 pm. Last year we had over 700 people at the festival which is open to the community. Currently, I need volunteers to lead games, crafts or be greeters at the front doors.

Mooz-lum

An independent film released in 2010, written and directed by Qasim “Q” Basir and starring Danny Glover, Mooz-lum tells the story of an African
American Muslim family whose lives are changed forever by 9/11 and its aftermath. Thus far, this film has had limited commercial release. This UK
screening marks its regional premiere in central Kentucky.

The 22nd annual Bluegrass Car Care Clinic will be held beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at Eastside Technical Center.

Free car inspections will be conducted by the Center's students who will work alongside members of the Professional Master Technicians Association, which is helping organize the event at 2208 Liberty Road next to the public school bus garage.

After the inspections are conducted, the students will discuss repairs that your car needs.

UK Law Conference Focuses on Intersection of Politics, Religion, Taxes, and Free Speech Controversy

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 6, 2011) — Can religious leaders make political endorsements without jeopardizing the tax-exempt status of their houses of worship?

That question and others will be addressed at "Politics, Taxes, and the Pulpit: Provocative First Amendment Conflicts," a conference sponsored by the University of Kentucky College of Law from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the UK College of Law Courtroom.

The conference will discuss issues explored in the text of the same name, recently published by Oxford University Press and co-authored by UK’s James and Mary Lassiter Distinguished Visiting Law Professor Nina J. Crimm and Professor Laurence H. Winer of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.

The conference will feature a presentation by the authors with comments by UK College of Law Dean David A. Brennen, UK law professors Joshua A. Douglas and Paul E. Salamanca, and the Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper, interim associate dean for interreligious life at Transylvania University.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN--Urban Studies and Mass Incarceration

The Department of Afroamerican & African Studies and the Residential
College (RC) at the University of Michigan invite applications for an
associate or full professorship in urban studies beginning
September 1, 2012. This is a university-year appointment. As part of a
cluster hire of up to four faculty, designed to create a ³Detroit
School² of urban studies, we are interested in candidates with research
and teaching interests that focus on how structures of inequality in
declining urban environments, such as Detroit, bear upon patterns of
crime and law enforcement and how policy responses ­ drug laws,
no-tolerance enforcement, sentencing guidelines ­ and the
practice of mass incarceration that has resulted affect individuals,
families, and communities. Candidates need not focus exclusively on
Detroit and its metropolitan area, but an interest in working in a
Detroit-centered research and teaching cluster is essential. We ask that

This joint position includes teaching responsibilities in Afroamerican &
African Studies, which has an undergraduate BA and a graduate
certificate program, and in the Residential College, which offers a
four-year liberal arts curriculum. While the field of training is open,
a scholar informed by an interdisciplinary perspective that incorporates
fields such as sociology, history, political economy, criminology, or
anthropology is especially attractive. An ideal candidate would also be
willing to assist in the growth of the Urban Studies minor in the RC,
and the Crime and Justice minor, joint between the RC and the Department
of Sociology. Teaching duties may also include courses in the Semester
in Detroit program, and in
community-based learning experiences in collaboration with other UM
units such as Urban Planning, Social Work, Sociology and the Prison
Creative Arts Project (PCAP), now housed in the RC.

(30 pages max), statement of teaching philosophy and experience,
evidence of teaching excellence, a statement of current and future
